Osteoporosis

Normal bone consists of cortical bone and trabecular bone and is metabolically active tissue that is constantly being renewed.

‘Old’ bone is reabsorbed and replaced by ‘new’ bone. If too much bone is reabsorbed too fast, osteoporosis will result. This happens when the cortical bone becomes thinner and the trabecular bone can disappear, which means that any holes within the bone become large and osteoporosis is the result.

Treatment for osteoporosis includes following your doctor’s and physiotherapist’s suggestions and performing regular exercise. Modify your lifestyle and monitor your diet. Your physiotherapist can advise you on weight-bearing and other exercises which will improve bone strength and are beneficial long-term.
