1. COPD (Emphysema, Bronchitis)
COPD is the result of lung damage from two conditions – chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These diseases affect different parts of the lungs but nearly always occur together, which is why they are now both referred to as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD used to be much better known by the term chronic bronchitis, and many people still use this. The main symptoms are cough, sputum and breathlessness. COPD is common, particularly in older people. It is one of the most important causes of sickness absence, accounting for many millions of days lost from work every year.
In order to treat COPD, the Client has to stop smoking as this will make the disease worse.
General fitness measures and exercise are very important, since they help to maintain the function of the lungs at their best possible level.
2. Asthma
Asthma is a chronic disease which already affects a large proportion of the population in the world, and whose prevalence is increasing. Asthmatics suffer from airway narrowing, which causes symptoms such as breathlessness, tightness of the chest, wheezing, and coughing. Medical treatment is a cornerstone in asthma management, but needs to be supported by other tools if self-management is to be the goal. One way to achieve this is with a regular physical exercise programme which your Hale Physiotherapy & Exercise practitioner will develop with you and specifically for you.
Acupuncture can often help alleviate asthma symptoms, especially when used as part of a tailor-made, holistic programme.
